What Does Valentine Mean?

January 22nd, 2010

valentinesday

Why does Valentine symbolize romantic love? When does it start symbolize that?

It all begins from the Legend Aurea of Jacobus. The very brief vita of St Valentine has him refusing to deny Christ. Before his head was cut off, this Valentine restored sight and hearing to the daughter of his jailer. Jacobus makes a play with the etymology of “Valentine”, “as containing valor”. Then, it was discovered about hearts and last notes signed “from your Valentine”, as is sometimes suggested in modern works of sentimental piety. Legend of Valentine appears in the late ages in England and France, when the day of 14 February became associated with romantic love. 14 February becomes Valentine’s Day.

The Hidden History of Valentine’s Day

January 22nd, 2010

valentines day

Valentine’s Day approaches — that time of year when lovers (and wannabe’s) are frantic, wondering whether to splurge on the heart-shaped box of chocolates, over-priced flowers, or the predictable greeting cards. Ever wonder how the madness all got started?

The history of Valentine’s Day began with the ancient Festival of Lupercalia which honored the founding of Rome. To insure the fertility of the land, the festival also celebrated the erotic love that was the special domain of Juno, the Roman goddess of love and marriage. The month February was even named in her honor — the word comes from the Latin word “febres”, meaning feverish or febrile.

Held on the hillside near the Lupercallus (”Wolf-Cave”), where Romulus and Remus, the founders of Rome, were raised as infants by a pack of wolves, the festivities were held on February 15 each year. Led by a pagan priest, the activities included “whipping” all the women to ensure their fertility.

Celebration of Valentine’s Day in Mexico

January 20th, 2010

happy-valentines-day

Mexican history reveals that they respect and value loves much in their everyday life. Love and friendship play a pivotal role in the development of their social fabric. Perhaps, the same spirit urged a Mexican poet to say, FRIENDSHIP IS LIKE A SHOWER OF PRECIOUS FLOWERS

That’s why ‘Dia de san Valentin’ or the “El Dia del Amor y la Amistad___The day of love and friendship”, is celebrated on every I4th of February, in Mexico. Thousands of Mexicans pledge on this day to provide their Valentine a delicately strong, fragrant, beautiful and everlasting shelter of their love. A heart made of roses is the most wanted product of the day. The whole of Mexico is decorated with flowers, balloons and other symbols of love. Bouquets, flower baskets, surprise floral arrangements, specially decorated tables with precious gifts are the essence of the day.

Fun Valentines Day Ideas

January 20th, 2010

valentines_day

Valentines Day, February 14th, is a fun day for both young and old! It is a day to think of those we love and celebrate friendship and kindness. It was one of my favorite winter holidays when the kids were younger as I loved all the hoopla of the parties in school, Scouts and Sunday School. It was a break from the winter doldrums! I loved going to the store to let them each pick out their own Valentines. Back then “computer printables” were not in the vocabulary, if you can believe it! We bought the old fashioned boxed cards that you tore apart on the perforated lines. They loved to pick out their own themes, be in Ninja Turtles, Super Heroes, Care Bears, or Cabbage Patch Kids. Yes, I am definitely dating myself as I think back on those years! Then we would take boxes and each one would wrap and decorate their own individual mailboxes! As Valentines began arriving from relatives; into the box they would go till Valentines Day!

In our home, we always added a component of giving to the day. We would bake and deliver home made cookies to elderly neighbors. We’d collect coins in a big decorated Valentines Day jug that we had decorated after shortly after Christmas and have fun watching it grow. On Valentines Day we would count the coins and decide where we would donate the monies. One year it was the local volunteer Fire Department as my son thought since the trucks were red and Santa always visited the town with the firemen each year, that they should receive the gift. We made presents for all the grandparents, which are still around today at Grandma and Grandpa’s house! We tried to make the kids focus on the ideas of loving and caring as well as the fun of receiving.

7 Ideas to Make Her First Valentine’s With You Her Best Ever

January 19th, 2010

valentines day

1. Write an old-fashioned love letter
This is great of you have only recently started dating but find her absolutely irresistible. And there’s this constant voice in your head telling you that she is ‘the’ one. If you are unsure of just what to say then fall back on the good old-fashioned letter.

Did you know that when we write, the nerves in the fingers directly stimulate the creative portion of the brain? so, if you can’t serenade her under her boudoir window, climb mountains or cross rivers to express your love, write a simple love letter. Yes, it is old-fashioned, takes longer than an email or a text message, but it is miles ahead of these modern, impersonal communicators in the romantic sweepstakes. Besides, she can hardly preserve your email under her pillow, can she? A print-out is so impersonal and official…and what if, heaven forbid, her system crashes? There goes your passionate prose.

2. Propose to her!
If you are dead sure that she is the one with whom you want to spend the rest of your life, then make this Valentine’s Day even more memorable. Pick a really romantic spot and lead her there. While she is taking in all that beautiful scenery, drop on one knee, whip out the velvet box and ask her to be your wife!

3. Announce your love to the world!
It needs daring, of course, but then nothing worthwhile was achieved without some risk factor, right? Just call the local radio station and get the radio jockey to have a song dedicated to your Valentine. Let the world know how important she is to you. She’ll be thrilled and the envy of all her friends.

4. A handcrafted card
Give the store-bought ones a miss even though they might be more flashy and expensive. Remember, money is not the factor here. Choose a theme and build around it. Use glitter pen, or gold or silver ink. If you paint well, nothing like a miniature painting on the card with your love message written inside. You can even write a poem for her inside the card.

5. Heart-shaped jewellery
Jewellery is such an intimate gift. She has to wear it either against her bare skin or over her dress — either way, your gift will always enjoy a close contact with her. Heart shapes rule the day — in cards, chocolates and jewellery. Buy her a lovely heart-shaped pendant in white gold or even rose quartz with an appropriate chain to go with it. If you wish, personalise the jewellery — have a tender message written on it just for her. Nothing says, ‘you are special’ more than a personalised gift.

6. Have a private celebration
You don’t have to be a part of that mad frenzy that is surging outside on the streets. Particularly, if she much prefers somewhere quiet and insulated from that entire hullabaloo. (You need to find this out earlier to make adequate plans on Valentine’s Day). Decide whether you wish to stay at your place or go to some quiet restaurant. If it’s your place, then do up your pad properly. Clean out all the mess a day earlier, spray room freshener and have flowers ready in a vase. Make all the preparations beforehand for the meal you intend to cook for her, so that when she arrives, you are not running between the microwave and the fridge while she watches that romantic flick you brought all alone.

7. Watch a romantic movie together
This is the day for celebrating romance and what better tribute to pay this day than catching a romantic movie together. Rent out a few CDs, get cosy on the sofa, have the table laden with enough snacks and beverages to get you through the lot — sit back and enjoy!

Whether you’ve been together a few weeks or a few months, this is the day to go all out and woo that special woman in your life. Her smile and the light in her eyes will be worth every effort.
